This piece is based on a dream my grandmother had growing up. At the age of 3, my grandmother fled her homeland of Estonia due to the USSR invasion. For the next 6 years she walked westward with her mother, sleeping outside, in school houses, and in various refugee camps before eventually migrating to Connecticut. During this time of displacement, my grandmother had a recurring dream. In this dream, she looked underneath her bed to find a wolf. This wolf then chased her and she ran. She told me that she knew this wolf symbolized a USSR solider during this period. Interestingly, after telling me about this childhood dream my grandmother had it again for the first time in decades. Only this time, she wasn’t afraid. She said that in the dream she knew the wolf was just an technological glitch, so within the dream she went back to sleep peacefully.
In response, I created this piece. A friend reads “Little Red Riding Hood” in Russian, which is accompanied by English subtitles, and a wolf dressed in Little Red Riding Hood’s cloak, chasing the camera. This video was projected on a hanging bed structure to reference its dream origin.
